"Sandhill Website Design has been fabulous to work with. I love that they can handle making large and small changes to the site and are open to customizing my website. Instead of spending hours trying to figure out how to make changes, I can focus on my business. Thanks for all you do!!"

Small Business Resources

Resources, resources, resources. Having ample information in starting or running your small business is critical. Here’s a list of small business resources we’ve have found helpful.

You’re dreaming and pondering things you’d like to do for a small business, and dreaming about being self employed. Do your research first, and you’ll be greatly rewarded (well, maybe). At least doing research beforehand will give you a greater sense of security and certainty when you actually do decide to make the leap to self-employment.

Just be aware, self-employment isn’t for everyone. I like this saying the best:

We go to work for someone else for the illusion of security– We go to work for ourselves for the illusion of freedom.

But, you really don’t know how it’s going to go until you jump in and try it. You can either keep dreaming and “planning”, or take a calculated risk and “just do it”.

The Links

Small Business Administration- U.S.A.
The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) was created in 1953 as an independent agency of the federal government to aid, counsel, assist and protect the interests of small business concerns, to preserve free competitive enterprise and to maintain and strengthen the overall economy of our nation. The SBA helps Americans start, build and grow businesses.

Wisconsin Department of Revenue
The Department of Revenue should be one of your first stops to do research on what legalities are involved in doing business in your state. I live in Wisconsin, so I offer this link for my state. Just use Google to research the state you plan to do business in. Outside of the U.S. I would think you’d find very similar laws pertaining to registering and reporting revenue from your business. Ask questions of your local government before you exchange any money so they won’t come back to you and slap you hands later.

Consumer’s Guide to Small Biz Insurance
Here’s a very nice pdf from the State of Wisconsin. It covers various forms of insurance you must consider: liability, property, vehicle, worker’s compensation, etc. Some are optional, and some are mandated by law to carry. This area is critical before you open shop. Look at it as a way to protect your personal assets you’ve worked so long to save.

Small Business Insurance Course
Another resource on learning about insurance for small businesses. It’s offer by MyOwnBusiness.org.
